Hello, and welcome to Focus on the Arts. I’m your host – Dave Green- and this is your very own local radio programme. Every Friday evening we put the spotlight on different arts and culture facilities, and look at the shows and events that are on offer in the coming weeks.
And today the focus is on The National Arts Centre. Now, if you don’t already know it yourself , I’m sure you’re all heard of it. It’s famous throughout the word as one of the major venues for classical music .
But did you know that it is actually much more than just a place to hear concerts? The Centre itself is a huge complex that caters for great range of arts. Under a single roof it houses concert rooms, theatres, cinemas, art galleries and a wonderful public library, as well as service facilities including three restaurants and a bookshop. So at any one time, the choice of entertainment there is simply enormous.
So, how did they manager to build such a big arts complex right in the heart of the city? Well, the area was completely destroyed by bombs during the war in 1940. So the opportunity was taken to create a cultural centre that would be, what they called: ‘THE City’s gift to the Nation’. Of course it took a while for such a big project to get started, but it was planned in the 60s, built in the 70s and eventually opened to the public in 1983 . Ever since then it has proved to be a great to be a great success. It is not privately owned, like many arts centres, but is still in public hands – it’s run by the City Council . Both our National Symphony Orchestra and National Theater Company were involved in the planning of the project, and they are now based there – giving regular performances every week – and as the Centre is open 363 days of the year, there are plenty of performances to choose from.

Xem giải thích

Presenter: Yvonne, how did you become interested in yoga?
Yvonne: Soon after I’d given birth to my first child, I started getting back pain and tried everything to treat it, but with no success. Then a friend suggested yoga. I was in so much pain that I didn’t need much persuading, and after a few weeks my back felt better. I’d never been a great one for exercise so I was amazed how much I enjoyed it.
Presenter: When did you decide you were going to teach professionally?
Yvonne: About three years ago. I was a school teacher at the time but I decided to go on a part-time contract with my school and run yoga sessions in my spare time at a local sports centre. Then I was offered the chance to rent a room in a leisure centre so I gave up the teaching job to do yoga full time.
Presenter: What’s the most rewarding part of your work?
Yvonne: Well, I always enjoyed being a teacher and I get the same satisfaction from being a yoga instructor. I like helping people to discover what interests them. I love seeing people transform from people in physical or emotional pain into positive, healthy individuals. Some become passionate about yoga. I find that particularly satisfying.
Presenter: Now what changes would I notice in my physical and mental health if I took up yoga?
Yvonne: It’s an excellent means of improving your strength and flexibility and it can help relieve aches and pains. I’ve also lowered my blood pressure since doing it. It can help people suffering from stress, and lots of clients say their memory and concentration have improved since they’ve started.
Presenter: Presumably, people notice the benefits of yoga in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle and diet.
Yvonne: Yes. Yoga is about achieving balance and this applies to your life generally. We should take steps to become positive, to avoid people who make us feel bad about ourselves, to see the best in others and be kind.
Presenter: What about diet?
Yvonne: Personally, I eat seasonally and locally. Fresh, locally produced food is likely to be healthier and less expensive. And when we’re eating, we should enjoy our food. Don’t rush your meals so you can watch TV. And although the odd bar of chocolate or biscuit won’t kill you, eat things like that in moderation.
Presenter: What advice would you give to anyone thinking of taking up yoga?
Yvonne: I’d say speak to people who have done it and ask them how they’ve benefited. Sometimes that’s more persuasive than asking an instructor. Find a local school and see if they have introductory sessions. But the most important thing is to give it a chance. Do it for at least three months. Then you’ll know for sure whether it’s your thing or not.

Part III. There are 10 mistakes in the following passage. Underline the mistakes and write the correct answers in the space provided. (5.0 points)

Let us suppose that you are in the position of a parent. Would you allow your children read any books without first checking their content? Would you take them to see any films without first finding whether they are suitable for them? If your answer of these questions is yes, then you are either extremely permissive, or just plain irresponsible. If your answer is not, then you are exercising your right as a parent to protect your children from what you consider to be desirable influences. In other words, by act as a censor yourself, you are admitting that there is a strong case for censorship. Children need protection and it is the parents’ responsibility to provide it. However, what about adults? Aren’t they old enough to decide that is good for them? The answer is that many adults are, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that all adults are like yourself. Censorship is for the good of society as whole. Highly civilized people might find it possible to live together without laws of any kinds: they would just rely in good sense to solve their problems. However, imagine what chaos there would be if we live in a society without laws! Like the law, censorship contributes to the good.

Part III. Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the following questions (A, B, C or D). Write your answer in the numbered space given below.  (5.0 points)

Although noise, commonly defined as unwanted sound, is a widely recognized form of pollution, it is very difficult to measure because the discomfort experienced by different individuals is highly subjective and, therefore, variable. Exposure to lower levels of noise may be slightly irritating, whereas exposure to higher levels may actually cause hearing loss. Particularly in congested urban areas, the noise produced as a by-product of our advancing technology causes physical and psychological harm but it also detracts from the quality of life for those exposed to it.

Unlike the eyes, which can be covered by the eyelids against strong light, the ear has no lid, and is, therefore, always open and vulnerable; noise penetrates without protection. Noise causes effects that the hearer cannot control and to which the body never becomes accustomed. Loud noises instinctively signal danger to any organism with a hearing mechanism, including human beings. In response, heartbeat and respiration accelerate, blood vessels constrict, functioning brought about the flow of adrenaline released in response to fear, and some of these responses persist even longer than the noise, occasionally as long as thirty minutes after the sound has ceased.

Because noise is unavoidable in a complex, industrial society, we are constantly responding in the same ways that we would respond to danger. Recently, researchers have concluded that noise and our response may be much more than an annoyance. It may be a serious threat to physical and psychological health and well-being, causing damage not only to the ear and brain but also to the heart and stomach. We have long known that hearing loss is America’s number one nonfatal health problem, but now we are learning that some of us with heart disease and ulcers may be victims of noise as well. Investigations on human subjects have demonstrated that babies are affected by noise even before they are born. Fetuses exposed to noise tend to be overactive, they cry easily, and they are more sensitive to gastrointestinal problems after birth. In addition, the psychological effect of noise is very important. Nervousness, irritability, tension, and anxiety increase affect the quality of rest during sleep, and the efficiency of activities during working hours, as well as the way that we interact with one another.

1. Which of the following is the author’s main point?
A. Hearing loss is America’s number one nonfatal health problem.
B. Loud noises signal danger.
C. Noise may pose a serious threat to our physical and psychological health.
D. The ear is not like their eye.

Part IV.  Choose the most suitable heading from the list (I –V) for each paragraph from A to E of the following article. Write your answer in the numbered space given below.   (5.0 points)

List of headings
I. Any decision is better than none
II. It’s not up to anyone else
III. Fear of what may result
IV. Follow your own judgments
V. Every has to make decisions

Paragraph A

We have to make choices everyday of our lives – whether it’s what to have for lunch or choosing between the red or the black jacket. Do you make up your mind quickly or are you one of life’s ditherers? The difference between having a tuna or chicken sandwich isn’t going to change the world, but sometimes you have to make an important decision that will have a long-term impact on your life.

Paragraph B

Deciding whether to go to college or leave your job and go traveling is not easy when you have got no experience to base your decision on. After all, how do you know what backpacking around Borneo will be like if you have never done it? What’s more, you’ve probably got everyone telling you what they think you should do. Their advice may sound sensible, but if your heart says no, it’s not the right choice for you. Learning to make your own mind up is about becoming an adult. When we are young, our parents do a lot of our decision-making for us, but as we grow up we take responsibility for ourselves. However, grabbing the power to make decision for ourselves means taking responsibility for the consequences- even when things go wrong.

Paragraph C

People become indecisive because they don’t want to do the wrong thing. You change your mind constantly, write endless lists of pros and cons, seek advice from everyone and end up horribly confused. The truth is that you are terrified of making a mistake and the bigger the decision, the bigger the potential mistake. For example, if you buy a horrible pair of boots, you know that all you’ve done is waste a week’s spending money. But if you buy a flat with someone and living together turns out to be a nightmare, you could end up involved in a financial and emotional mess.

Paragraph D

But the fact is that there is an element of chance in every decision, so often our gut feelings are the only thing we have got to guide us. Whatever you decide at the time is right; It’s only in the light of what happens next that it can seem wrong. If you decide to spend your hard-earned money on a battered old car and three months later it falls to bits, you’ll think you made a terrible decision. But if it goes along for years, you’ll congratulate yourself. So stop trying to predict the future and trust your instincts.

Paragraph E

Decisive people command respect because they know what they think. You may think it’s amusing to have a reputation for being indecisive, but eventually you’ll drive others mad. Indecisive people lack personal power because they appear unreliable, out of control and even selfish. If you’re always causing people trouble because you change your mind at the last minute.
